SAINT PAUL, MN – This Saturday, March 24, Twin Cities students, families and allies will gather for the March for Our Lives, demanding an end to gun violence in our schools and communities. Thousands of high school and college students will march from Saint Paul’s Harriet Island to the state Capitol, where we will join many more families and community members for a short rally.
Five weeks after the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, killed 17 people, hundreds of thousands of people will march in every state, with more than 800 March for Our Lives events scheduled worldwide. See www.MarchforOurLives.com/ events for latest information. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are leading the main March in Washington, D.C.
We rally at the Minnesota Capitol to remind our elected officials that their most fundamental job is to keep us SAFE from gun violence in our schools, movie theaters, concerts, churches, synagogues and mosques, on our streets and in our communities. We demand common-sense gun safety.
After Parkland, young Minnesotans organized a statewide chapter of Students Demand Action, taking responsibility for our own health and safety because legislators and other adults have failed us. As Benilde-St. Margaret’s sophomore Mia Rheineck says, “This year, we became required to have active shooter drills. There’s no reason someone should go to school and be prepared for gunfire. There is absolutely no reason a kid should see their classmates and teachers die in front of them.”
MARCH STARTS at HARRIET ISLAND; LIMITED PARKING
By 9:30 a.m. Saturday, thousands of our Twin Cities high school and college classmates will gather at Saint Paul’s Harriet Island. Parking is extremely limited. Marchers should take public transit, or carpool and park in downtown Saint Paul then walk south across the Wabasha Bridge to Harriet Island. March for Our Lives MSP site shows best ways to reach Harriet Island and the Capitol, as well as available parking downtown.
From Harriet Island, we will march 1.6 miles through downtown Saint Paul. Once we reach the Capitol, we will proceed to the center promenade, with families and allies along the east and west sides of the Capitol lawn. There will be informal speeches at the Capitol beginning at 10. The official program at the Capitol will begin at 11.
CAPITOL RALLY begins at 11 a.m.
Leaders from Students Demand Action-Minnesota have organized the rally. On the Minnesota Capitol steps, student speakers and others will recount how gun violence and repeated threats of school shootings have changed our lives and galvanized us to act. A University of Minnesota student will tell about how his father was fatally shot at work. Some students and parents from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in town for a high school hockey tournament, will attend our event. Several of the Parkland, Florida, players and a parent will speak.
As we rally outside the Capitol, we want legislators to know we’re paying attention to what they accomplish—or fail to accomplish—this session. We’ve invited Rep. Dave Pinto to stand in solidarity with other state representatives and senators who have championed common-sense gun bills. We will remember the shameful way legislators blocked the background check and protective order bills from getting full and fair votes. We intend to track what elected officials do and hold them accountable.
Elected officials should know that students from throughout Minnesota are standing up for safe schools and communities. Our Saint Paul march is expected to be the largest of the thirteen marches in Minnesota. Students and families are marching throughout Minnesota for safe schools and communities. Events are scheduled in Aitkin, Brainerd, Chisago-Isanti, Duluth, Ely, Grand Marais, Grand Rapids, Rochester, Sartell, Starbuck, Willmar and Winona.
Our program includes students from urban and suburban schools; we'll hear from students from Saint Paul and Minneapolis, as well as West Metro Walkout students from Orono, Maple Grove, Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Chanhassen and Edina.
Voter registration will be an essential part of our march and rally, with the League of Women Voters supporting the effort, including when we’ll raise our phones and pledge to vote on this issue in November. We won’t forget the lessons we’re learning during this year’s legislative session. We intend to use our power, electing candidates who will pass gun laws to protect students from gun violence. We are determined to fight for our lives, our dreams and our communities. And we will not stop until all American students can feel safe in their classrooms.
